How are we accessing art in Covid times?
Because we cannot leave our houses except for very specific reasons here in Greece, the only way for me to access art is online, or if i happen to encounter small images in the streets on my walks. Galleries and museums are closed, so there is no way to have the same experiences we had with art pre covid times. Will the way we interact with art change because of these circumstances? For me, it’s not the same to look at murals and graffiti online as it is when you are standing right in front of them. I’m sure the same thing goes for other forms of art as well. You don’t have the same intimacy with artworks when you’re looking at it online, unless of course it is meant to be viewed in that form (digital art for example). What will become of performative art? When will a theatre be able to be filled with spectators again? In Greece especially, the arts sector is struggling and is receiving very little support from the government. How can you suppress the arts when that’s what helps many people maintain their mental health?
Today I’m really thinking about the way we access art and how it’s changed in the past year. I miss the feeling of walking through an art space and observing other people’s reactions to pieces along with my own. I miss going to watch a play, and going to concerts where everyone is there for the same reason, but are each having their own personal experience. I miss walking aimlessly through the streets and spotting images on the walls, whether they be big or small. Will we ever go back to looking at art this way, or will our interactions with art change completely moving forward?
